In today’s world, society has created an environment and lifestyle which demands people address the subject of detoxification. What was once not necessary, may indeed be just that today, necessary. It is only in recent years that conventionally trained doctors and the medical communities have been willing to address the possibility that we have created a toxic environment which is detrimental to our health and well being.
With all the advances in modern medicine, society has become accustomed to looking for a quick fix. Take a pill or get a shot to “cure” a symptom. This is what is expected. It is this attitude which has laid the foundation for “unexplained” chronic illness and an increase in disease. The government would have you believe that we are living longer healthier lives. The truth is that those numbers are misleading because they are counting people that are technically alive but are relying on machines and pharmaceuticals. By many standards the quality of life is gone sooner than in the past. This is a well documented growing trend.
Just by existing in this time, the human body is exposed to toxins. The big debate comes in when the government tests an individual substance and declares acceptable or safe exposure levels. The problem is that there are literally hundreds of thousands of chemicals that are being dumped into our ecosystem, particularly since the beginning of the industrialization era. This really has not been that long and we are only now beginning to acknowledge the true magnitude of the problem.
The bright side of all this is that there are not only natural and alternative practitioners, but traditionally trained doctors, that realize the system is failing and they are exploring alternative approaches to natural and long lasting health care. To effectively address the problem, there must be a huge shift in the approach to health care. The main focus in natural or holistic health care must be to address the root of the problem and not just what we see or feel on the surface. If a person experiences symptoms of illness, particularly of the chronic nature or a disease state, chances are they have been accumulating and developing a state of imbalance within the body which has led to the symptom. This is where detoxification comes in.
By detoxifying the body, we rid or cleanse the body of unwanted toxins. Skeptics say the human body has its own system for detoxification. This is certainly true. However, humans were not made to handle the constant exposure that they face today. There are several factors that contribute to this overload. Some are the new chemicals we have created, the amount of these chemicals present today, the negative lifestyle factors such as stress which have a great impact on the body’s ability to process toxins, and the typical western diet of processed foods, chemical food additives and poor nutrition.
To address the root of most chronic illness and disease, natural health practitioners and doctors who specialize in integrative medicine, are finally addressing the cumulative effects of toxins. By detoxifying the body and addressing the health of an individual as a whole (Holistic Health), they are able to start correcting the imbalance caused by years of neglect.
The human body and nature in general is constantly striving to achieve or maintain balance. The most progressive minds in science today seek to understand life at its most elemental level. This means relating everything to its most basic form of energy. The human body, physical things, nature, Earth, the universe, is all made of energy. Science is only beginning to truly understand how we are all connected.
What we should feel comfortable saying is this: Society is overloaded with toxins, we have corrupted our own living environment. The way to good health and well being is to clean it up. Both externally and internally. As individuals we can start by taking care of our bodies and our own local environment. Start with detoxification. Detoxify the body and create a cleaner healthier environment. Strive for balance in all areas of life. Address the largest imbalances first and the rest will fall into place.
